Nick Cave was the only cool thing about the PLUG Awards.

March 6, 2008

Die-hard fans of Nick Cave and The Badseeds, The Birthday Party and Grinderman rejoiced on Thursday night at terminal 5. They made their way to the front row, elbowing past the most surly and unfriendly crowd of “journalists” that you could possibly have in one room in New York to pay tribute to the legendary man whose career spans three decades of music, literature and film. The PLUG Awards have been reamed for being mediocre in the past, and this year was no different. Our host, “comedian” Patton Oswalt, made no real effort to fill the awkward silences between telecast acceptance speeches from your run-of-the-mill indie lineup. Nor did he even have any good jokes. And I don’t blame him…bad indie rock is not funny, it’s sad. Battles, Animal Collective, The National and Arcade Fire all won awards, but the really important one went to Nick Cave. (Good choice!) He and the Badseeds were the only saving grace for this brutally boring night. Oh yeah…check out more photos of Jose Gonzales, Dizzee Rascal and Battles by either clicking below, or by going to the redesigned SPIN.com.
