What do Freshkills and Rumanian Buck have in common?

February 17, 2010

Both bands played at Glasslands last week, are jackieroman.com veterans, and both feature some pretty tasty guitars. I’ve been on special assignment lately to photograph Aaron Lazar’s (Rumanian Buck) re-issue Danelectro, while Johnny Robearts (Freshkills) just started slinging a Jazzmaster… that he got from Mishka Shubaly… who is the least common denominator in this equation, and who also had a birthday that same night.

Happy Birthday Mishka!

what’s cookin’ in the studio

February 11, 2010

Today I am working on some photos of a Brooklyn Indie Rock band. Suprised? Neither am I! These guys are called Heads Up Display.  We spent an entire day running around Manhattan in the rain and getting kicked out of hotels.  Here’s a sneak peek.

Jack Oblivian @ Bruar Falls

January 14, 2010

Jack Oblivian and the Tennessee Tearjerkers played a special Vice/”Scion Garage Show”-sponsored  free show at Bruar Falls.  John-Paul Keith (The One Four Fives) was particularly KILLER with the licks on the ash-body Telecaster, while jack wailed on the Jaguar (which would be my dream guitar, if I were a guitarist).  Jack has been doing reunions with The Oblivans and The Compulsive Gamblers this past year, and as fans of both those bands, I knew what I was in for.  It’s a particular brand of rock and roll, prevalently from Memphis, the kind that makes you ask, Why is this so good?!  Speaking of Memphis, they also payed tribute to their dear friend Jay Reatard (R.I.P.), with Black Boots (a 7″ that came out on Shattered Records in 2004).   Opening the show were Chicago’s Mannequin Men, with plenty of swagger and the songs to back it up.

R.I.P. Jay Reatard, 29

January 13, 2010

Sad news today, at around 3:30am, Jay Reatard, 29 passed away in his sleep at his home in Memphis.  Here are some photos I took of him in the green room at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York 7 weeks ago.  He had just opened up for The Pixies.  Later that evening, at Alix’s apartment, we ate meatballs and looked at photos from their youth.  I remember being absolutely certain that I was taking pictures of someone so great, and so accomplished, and being so inspired.  What an enormous loss for the music community.

Agent Orange

January 11, 2010

[LimeWire Music Blog] Seminal California sk8 punk band Agent Orange played at Mercury Lounge in New York City last night. The current lineup is Mike Palm, Perry Gx and new drummer Dave Klein.  Laramie Dean (surf punk!) did some guest guitar on Miserlou.  Highlights included spending some time making a new band photo for these guys in the Mercury basement, my flash getting busted into a million pieces in the brutal mosh pit during “Too Young To Die” and the insane gang vocals during “Bloodstains.” The night was a total throwback to the firehouse/vfw hall DIY pop-punk days of my adolescence. Sigh.
